In May 2026, the Indonesian Ministry of National Development and Planning officially approved the 2 GW high-voltage direct current transmission and supporting distribution upgrade project in Batam City, Riau Islands Province. As a core project of Indonesia's island energy integration construction, the project will comprehensively upgrade the Riau Islands regional distribution network structure, fill in the island's power distribution shortcomings, and help Batam Island build a core hub for the regional energy industry in eastern Indonesia.
The Tennet high-voltage DC transmission project approved this time will core support the construction of Batam Island's first large-scale wind power base, and specifically solve the industry's pain points such as difficulty in absorbing new energy power generation on the island, inconvenient cross-regional power distribution, and low reliability of power supply on outer islands. The project not only builds a large-capacity cross-island high-voltage transmission trunk line, but also simultaneously implements a regional power distribution network transformation project, upgrading old distribution lines, adding regional power distribution hub stations, and deploying intelligent power distribution dispatching equipment to achieve efficient access and precise distribution of wind power and clean energy.
For a long time, many Indonesian islands have had problems such as scattered distribution networks, weak grids, unstable power supply, and difficulty in connecting new energy sources to the grid, which have seriously restricted regional economic development. The implementation of this project has opened up the power interconnection channels in Batam and surrounding outer islands, greatly improving regional power distribution coverage and power supply stability. At the same time, the project has created a standardized scheme for island wind and solar new energy supporting power distribution, providing a benchmark reference for Indonesia's subsequent island power distribution upgrades and new energy development, and promoting the standardized and integrated development of Indonesia's island power distribution system.
